Honey Cake / Bolo de Mel

🇬🇧 The Honey Cake is one of Madeira’s most traditional food dishes. It is made with treacle and is particular in that is has a long shelf life.
The Honey Cake of Madeira is traditionally linked to Christmas. It is customary to prepare it on December 8th, the day of Our Lady of the Conception, in order to acquire, during that period, the characteristics which make it unique.
The Honey Cake of Madeira, which can be preserved for a whole year, is prepared with treacle, its origins dating back to the heyday of sugar production in the archipelago.

O Bolo de Mel da Madeira está tradicionalmente ligado ao Natal. É hábito prepará-lo no dia 8 de dezembro, dia de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, de modo a adquirir nesse período as características que o tornam único.
O bolo de mel da Madeira, que pode conservar-se durante um ano inteiro, é preparado com mel de cana, remontando as suas origens à época áurea de produção de açúcar no arquipélago.
