Why Hike Vereda do Urzal?
Den PR 2 – Vereda do Urzal is one of the original “Royal Paths” used for centuries by locals to carry goods between the South (Curral das Freiras) and the North (Boaventura).
It takes you through the absolute heart of the Laurisilva Forest (UNESCO World Heritage). The trees here are ancient, twisted, and often dripping with water. It is a mystical, jungle-like experience unlike the coastal cliff walks.

Fajã das Cardas (Start)
Start in the deep valley of Curral das Freiras. The path climbs steeply past agricultural terraces and chestnut trees.

Boca das Torrinhas
The high point (pass) at 1,320m. Here you stand on the spine of the island with views of Pico Ruivo to the East.

The Green Descent
Descending North, you enter the “Green Room.” The Laurisilva forest becomes dense, dark, and incredibly lush. The path can be muddy.

Lombo do Urzal (Finish)
The trail widens and ends in the quiet village of Boaventura. You finish at a small road surrounded by green mountains.

The highest point offers a dramatic frame of the jagged peaks of the central massif looming over the forest.
In the northern section, the path is lined with massive ferns that can be taller than a person. A Jurassic Park vibe.
You will cross several small streams. Use a slow shutter speed to capture the water flowing over mossy rocks.

This is a Linear Trail crossing the island. You start in the South (Curral) and end in the North (Boaventura) or vice-versa.
🛑 Logistics Warning
Do not park at the start! You will end up 1 hour away from your car by road. Use a taxi drop-off/pick-up service or use two cars if you are in a large group.

🚘 Deep Valley Driving
Curral das Freiras is famous for steep access.
Vores anbefaling af udlejning: Both Curral das Freiras and Boaventura are at the bottom of deep valleys. The roads out are long climbs. Ensure your rental has good brakes and engine power. This is Madeira Island vehicles are checked for mountain safety.
