Why Hike Caminho do Norte?

Den PR 21 is a section of the old “Caminho Real” (Royal Path) network that connected the entire island before cars existed. This specific stretch was the main link between the north (São Vicente) and the south (Ribeira Brava).

It is a journey through history, walking on ancient stone paving through lush Laurisilva forest, descending from the foggy pass of Encumeada into the deep green northern valleys.

The path zig-zags down through dense Laurisilva vegetation. You will see ancient Tils and Laurels covered in lichen.

Vejens tilstand Excellent

Vores anbefaling af udlejning: The drive to Encumeada is one of the most scenic on the island. It involves a steady climb. Any car category works fine here, but a Cabriolet allows you to see the towering peaks above you as you drive.
