Why Hike Vereda do Larano?

Den Vereda do Larano offers arguably the most dramatic coastal views in Madeira. It connects the town of **Machico** (via Boca do Risco) to **Porto da Cruz**.

Unlike the lush green levadas, this path is raw and exposed. You walk along a narrow balcony cut into the red volcanic clay cliffs, with the deep blue Atlantic crashing hundreds of meters below you. It is a thrilling sensory experience of wind, salt, and height.

The Coastal Route: Machico (Levada do Caniçal) → Boca do Risco → Larano → Porto da Cruz.

Trin-for-trin-guide

  • 1

    Machico Start

Start at the Pico do Facho tunnel or Levada do Caniçal. It’s an easy, flat warm-up heading towards the coast.

  • 2

    Boca do Risco Viewpoint

The path opens up to the famous “Risk Mouth”. This is a great rest stop with stunning views looking east towards Ponta de São Lourenço.

  • 3

    The Larano Cliffs

Turning left (west), the path narrows. You traverse the sheer face of the red cliffs. This is the photogenic “Larano” section. Watch your step.

  • 4

    Descent to Porto da Cruz

The trail eventually moves inland slightly, descending through the forest and farmland (Maiata) before reaching the rum factory in Porto da Cruz.

🧗 The Red Wall

The contrast of the rusty red vertical cliffs against the deep teal ocean is unique to this specific trail.

🦅 Penha d’Águia Backdrop

As you approach Porto da Cruz, the massive Eagle Rock frames the village perfectly.

Most hikers park in Machico, take a taxi to the start of the Levada, hike to Porto da Cruz, and then take a bus or taxi back to Machico.

Chaufførens perspektiv

🚘 Taxi & Trailheads

Easy roads, complex logistics.

Vejens tilstand Excellent (VR1/VE1)
Taxi Availability High (Bolt/Uber Works)
Return Trip 20 min Drive

Vores anbefaling af udlejning: Since this hike involves highway driving between towns, a standard Economy Car is perfectly fine. You don’t need steep mountain power for this specific logistics run.

🍹 Efter vandreturen: Hvor skal man spise?

Porto da Cruz Arrival

If you end in Porto da Cruz, you are in the land of Surf & Rum. Grab a meal at Praça do Engenho right by the sea. Order the “Gaiado” (dried tuna), a local specialty.
