Located on the easternmost tip of Madeira, the PR8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço is a coastal trail across the peninsula of the same name – a partial nature reserve within the Natura 2000 Network. In contrast with the verdant landscapes found throughout the island, this landscape is defined by volcanic rock formations, reddish-brown hues, low vegetation and endless ocean views, both north and south.

The hike begins at Baía d’Abra, with the Atlantic as a constant backdrop. The undulating path alternates between flat sections and gentle climbs, crossing windswept ridges and small coves. Along the way, you’ll admire the peninsula’s unique geology, with dramatic cliffs and islets such as Desembarcadouro, the Lighthouse and Ilhéu do Cevada.

The flora and fauna here are equally distinctive: endemic plants like Pride of Madeira and everlasting flowers withstand the dry climate, while seabirds such as Cory’s shearwater and Bulwer’s petrel find key nesting grounds. On clear days, you can spot the Desertas Islands and even Porto Santo.

The main destination is the Casa do Sardinha, a support post for park rangers, where you can rest and refill your water. From here, a short path leads to the Cais do Sardinha, perfect for a refreshing swim at the end of the hike.

Step into the heart of Madeira’s enchanting Laurissilva forest with a seamless roundtrip transfer to the famous Levada das 25 Fontes and Levada do Risco – two of the island’s most breathtaking hiking trails. Starting in the Rabaçal valley, this magical journey takes you through ancient forests, past moss-covered rocks and along peaceful levada paths, where the constant sound of running water accompanies every step.

The 25 Fontes trail leads you to a spectacular natural amphitheatre, where crystal-clear waters spring from the cliffs and gently flow into the tranquil lagoon of the 25 Fontes — the perfect spot to pause, breathe and absorb the raw beauty of nature.

Just minutes away, a short detour takes you to the Risco Waterfall, an impressive cascade nearly 100 metres high, tumbling down a sheer rock wall. A true spectacle of power and elegance that remains unforgettable.

More than just a hike, this experience is an immersion into Madeira’s history and biodiversity: the levada network, built over centuries to bring water to agricultural lands, now offers accessible trails within a protected ecosystem classified as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.

Nestled in the heart of the Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. the Levada do Caldeirão Verde is one of Madeira’s most iconic hikes. The trail begins at the picturesque Casa das Queimadas, a mountain refuge with thatched roofing and traditional Madeiran architecture that looks as if it has stepped out of an old postcard.

From there, the path follows a levada built in the 18th century, originally designed to carry water from the springs of Caldeirão Verde to the farmlands of Santana. Stretching for about 6.5 km one way (13 km round trip), the route unfolds through lush green slopes, dramatic ravines, dense vegetation and a series of emblematic tunnels carved into the rock, all adorned with ferns, moss and centuries-old trees.

Along the way, natural viewpoints reveal sheer cliffs and sweeping views of Madeira’s northern landscapes. The constant sound of flowing water accompanies hikers all the way to the final destination: the Caldeirão Verde, an impressive natural amphitheatre where a 100-metre waterfall plunges into an emerald-green lagoon at the base of a rock wall covered in vegetation.

This is the perfect spot to pause, soak in the atmosphere, and feel the refreshing coolness of this untouched sanctuary. Here, nature shows itself in its purest form — humid air, the echo of falling water and the sensation of being in a secluded refuge, far removed from daily life.

The Levada do Caldeirão Verde is more than just a hike: it is a journey back in time through Madeira’s hydraulic heritage and a sensory experience that blends landscape, history and biodiversity in a single trail.

Starting at the water treatment station in São Jorge, municipality of Santana, the Levada do Rei (PR18) invites you on a trail immersed in the freshness of the Laurissilva forest. The path winds along the northern slopes of Madeira, leading you through green corridors, natural bridges, and lush vegetation tunnels where the sound of birds blends with the flowing levada water.

Every curve reveals a new scene — small streams cross the trail, endemic birds animate the forest, and natural viewpoints open up towards the ocean and the verdant hillsides.

At the end, you’ll reach Ribeiro Bonito, one of the island’s most authentic and preserved valleys, wrapped in luxuriant vegetation and crossed by crystal-clear streams.

More than just a hike, it is a contemplative experience: the Laurissilva forest, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reveals its most dense and pristine side here.
