💡 Pro-vinkki: This is an “off-the-beaten-path” historical trail. You will likely be the only person on it. It is great for escaping the crowds of PR 1 or PR 9.

Why Hike Caminho do Norte?
The PR 21 is a section of the old “Caminho Real” (Royal Path) network that connected the entire island before cars existed. This specific stretch was the main link between the north (São Vicente) and the south (Ribeira Brava).
It is a journey through history, walking on ancient stone paving through lush Laurisilva forest, descending from the foggy pass of Encumeada into the deep green northern valleys.

Encumeada (Start)
Start near the Encumeada Snack Bar (1007m). Look for the sign PR 21. The trail begins with a gentle descent into the forest.

The Forest Descent
The path zig-zags down through dense Laurisilva vegetation. You will see ancient Tils and Laurels covered in lichen.

Old Paving
Pay attention to the ground. In many places, the original hand-laid stone paving from centuries ago is still visible.

Ribeira Grande (Finish)
The trail ends near the hamlet of Ribeira Grande in the São Vicente valley. You emerge onto a paved road.
📸 Parhaat valokuvapaikat
Before starting, the view from the pass looking south to Ribeira Brava and north to São Vicente simultaneously is unique.
Close-up shots of the mossy cobblestones add a great historical texture to your photo album.
Sections of the path are completely enclosed by giant ferns, creating a natural green tunnel effect.

Miten sinne pääsee
Drive to the Encumeada mountain pass on the ER 104 road. Park at the large lot near the souvenir shop.
🚕 Taxi Back
Once you finish in Ribeira Grande, it is a long, steep walk back up the road (not recommended). Pre-arrange a taxi or hitch a ride back up to Encumeada.

The crossroads of the island.
Vuokraussuosituksemme: The drive to Encumeada is one of the most scenic on the island. It involves a steady climb. Any car category works fine here, but a Vaihdettava allows you to see the towering peaks above you as you drive.
Essential Gear
- Hiking Boots: The old stones can be slippery with moss. Good grip is essential.
- Rain Jacket: Encumeada is often where the clouds from the north get stuck. It can be misty.
- Phone/GPS: To call a taxi at the end.
