Why Hike Caminho do Norte?

De PR 21 is a section of the old “Caminho Real” (Royal Path) network that connected the entire island before cars existed. This specific stretch was the main link between the north (São Vicente) and the south (Ribeira Brava).

It is a journey through history, walking on ancient stone paving through lush Laurisilva forest, descending from the foggy pass of Encumeada into the deep green northern valleys.

Onze huuraanbeveling: The drive to Encumeada is one of the most scenic on the island. It involves a steady climb. Any car category works fine here, but a Convertible allows you to see the towering peaks above you as you drive.
