Why Hike Penha de Águia?
The “Eagle’s Rock” is one of the most iconic geological symbols of Madeira’s North Coast. Standing at nearly 600m tall, it separates **Porto da Cruz** from **Faial**.
This is not a casual walk; it is a serious cardio workout. The reward is a 360-degree panoramic view from the summit, looking down vertically onto the crashing waves and the terracotta roofs of the villages below.
Mapa szlaku
The trail crosses the rock from one side to the other (Porto da Cruz to Faial).
Przewodnik krok po kroku
-
1
The Start (Porto da Cruz)
Begin at the ‘Caminho Real’ near the old Rum Factory (Engenhos do Norte). The path starts climbing immediately through dense vegetation.
-
2
The Ascent
The path is steep, often muddy, and slippery. You will use your hands in some sections. The incline is relentless until you reach the saddle.
-
3
The Summit (Top View)
At the top (approx 590m), the vegetation opens up. You can see the coastline stretching all the way to Ponta de São Lourenço.
-
4
The Descent (Faial Side)
You can return the same way (recommended if you parked in Porto da Cruz) or descend the steeper side towards Faial (requires a taxi back).
Najlepsze miejsca do robienia zdjęć
Looking straight down onto the roofs of Porto da Cruz gives a dizzying perspective of height.
From the top, the ocean looks like a map, with white foam crashing against the black volcanic cliffs.
Parts of the ridge path offer views of the island’s central massif (Pico Ruivo) on a clear day.
Wyposażenie i udogodnienia

Perspektywa kierowcy
🚘 Coastal Roads
Access is easy, parking is the hard part.
Nasza rekomendacja dotycząca wynajmu: Since this is a coastal village drive, any car will do. A Kabriolet is fantastic for the drive from Machico to Porto da Cruz!
Niezbędny sprzęt
- Kijki turystyczne: Highly recommended. The descent is punishing on the knees.
- Buty Grip: The dirt path turns to ice-like mud when wet. Good lugs are essential.
- Woda: Bring at least 1.5L. It is a steep, sweaty climb.
🍹 Po wędrówce: gdzie zjeść?
Restaurante A Pipa
Located right at the bottom in Porto da Cruz. It is famous for fresh fish and Espetada. Afterwards, grab a “Poncha” at the Rum Factory next door!
