One of the most rewarding and unforgettable experiences I have ever had, was to be seating on the top of Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest mountain with 1862 meters high (6120 feet), after a 3 km hike under a dazzling starry sky, waiting for that moment just before dawn, when a thin bright gold color line illuminates the horizon, a new day is born. Within a few seconds, the twilight paints the sky with the most beautiful mixture of colours and gradients I have ever seen, and when we realize we’re above an ocean of clouds, it fills our soul. For half an hour I couldn’t speak, I was completely absorbed by that constantly changing work of art.
This is my suggestion for an unforgettable tour. As the sun rises, you will became conscious of the surrounding dramatic landscape, as we follow the 3 km path back to the parking place. On the way back, we will make a few stops for a typical breakfast, visiting some points of interest and for a bit of off-road in our ancient Laurel Forest as well.
This tour can be extended 1 or 2 hours without any extra cost.

Depending on where you are staying, this tour starts at a early hours. The idea is to arrive to Santana, in the Northeast of Madeira one and a half hour to two hours before the sunrise.
-We start the hike where the road ends, in Achada do Teixeira, Santana (1562 meters), from here to Pico Ruivo (1862 meters) it is about 3 km, uphill, in a well marked and safe footpath.
-Along the way there are 3 mountain shelters before we reach the mountain top.
-After the sunrise, we will start descending through the same footpath to where the car is parked and we will head to the center of the village for a quick breakfast and then, if you agree, we can make some more stops in Santana, Faial and Porto da Cruz to visit some magical spots offering amazing views away from the touristy circuits just before we get back to your accommodation.
This hike can be challenging due to the ascent, temperatures and slight reduction in oxygen levels and can only be done under favorable weather conditions. Tour is customisable!
