PR1 Madeira is Reopening: New Rules, Dates, and Fees for Vereda do Areeiro (2026 Update)
The wait is almost over! The PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, arguably Madeira’s most famous and breathtaking hike, is finally preparing to welcome hikers back after extensive rock stabilization and trail repair works.
If you are planning to conquer the peaks this year, things are going to look a bit different. From mandatory bookings to a brand-new one-way system, here is everything you need to know about the reopening of the trail connecting Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo.
📅 The Official Reopening Date
Mark your calendars: the full PR1 trail will officially reopen on April 27, 2026. This highly anticipated date falls right after the famous MIUT (Madeira Island Ultra Trail) running event wraps up.
Important Note for Early Visitors: For roughly the first month after reopening, access will be phased. The trail will only be open on weekends (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). From Monday to Thursday, the path will close again to allow workers to safely finish paving and stabilization efforts.
🚶♂️ The Biggest Change: A New One-Way Route
This is the most crucial update for your itinerary. The PR1 is now a strictly one-way trail.
The Rule: You are only permitted to hike in the direction of Pico do Areeiro ➡️ Pico Ruivo. You can no longer do the return hike back to your starting point.
The Exception: The initial stretch from Pico do Areeiro up to the Pedra Rija viewpoint remains bidirectional, perfect if you just want to catch the sunrise and do a short walk.
Logistics: Because of this change, you must plan your transport carefully. After reaching Pico Ruivo, you will need to hike down to Achada do Teixeira (Santana) and arrange a transfer or taxi to get back to your vehicle.
💻 Mandatory Booking and Updated Fees
Maintaining this incredible trail comes at a high cost, and the local authorities have updated the access rules for 2026 to ensure the trail’s preservation.
New Access Fee: The ticket for PR1 is now €10.50 per person (significantly higher than the €4.50 fee for other standard trails).
Strict Time Slots: You cannot simply show up. You must book your access in advance through the official government portal, SIMplifica. Bookings are divided into strict 30-minute time slots to prevent overcrowding.
Exemptions: Children under 12 and official residents of Madeira are exempt from the fee. However, everyone (including kids and locals) must still be registered on the platform to secure a time slot.
🚗 Pro-Tip: Getting to the Peak
Public transport to Pico do Areeiro is essentially non-existent, and you will want to be there early—especially if you want to catch the legendary sunrise above the clouds.
