Wir beginnen unseren Ausflug mit einem Besuch des Aussichtspunkts Pico dos Barcelos (Panoramablick über die Bucht und die Stadt Funchal). Dann geht es weiter nach Eira do Serrado, wo der Aussichtspunkt auf 1094 Metern Höhe einen atemberaubenden Blick auf die Gemeinde Curral das Freiras bietet. Dann geht es hinunter in das kleine Dorf, das in der Talsohle liegt. Hier können Sie die Pfarrkirche besichtigen und in den örtlichen Restaurants einige der Köstlichkeiten probieren, die aus den typischen Produkten der Region hergestellt werden: Sauerkirsche und Kastanie.

Wir fahren in Richtung Câmara de Lobos, bekannt als das malerischste Fischerdorf unserer Insel, mit einem Halt. Anschließend fahren wir zum Aussichtspunkt Cabo Girão (589 m), der kürzlich als Naturdenkmal eingestuft wurde. Anschließend setzen wir unsere Reise nach Ribeira Brava fort. Hier können wir den kleinen Markt und die “Promenade” besuchen. Weiter geht es entlang der Südküste, vorbei an der Stadt Ponta de Sol und dann hinauf auf die Hochebene Paúl da Serra (1400 m).

Wir durchqueren die Hochebene in Richtung Porto Moniz, im äußersten Nordwesten der Insel, wo sich die berühmten natürlichen Schwimmbäder befinden. Mittagsrast (fakultativ). Danach kehren wir entlang der Nordküste zurück, vorbei an Seixal, wo wir anhalten, um den Wasserfall “Véu da Noiva” zu besichtigen. Weiter geht es nach São Vicente, einer grünen Gemeinde. Auf dem Rückweg zur Südküste durchqueren wir einheimische Waldgebiete, bis wir den Aussichtspunkt (Miradouro) da Boca da Encumeada erreichen, von dem aus man einen herrlichen Blick auf die Täler der Nord- und Südküste der Insel hat. Rückkehr nach Funchal.

Unser tour beginnt mit einem Besuch in der Gemeinde Camacha, wo zum ersten Mal in Portugal Fußball gespielt wurde. Dann geht es hinauf zum Pico do Areeiro, dem dritthöchsten Gipfel der Insel (1818 m), von dem aus man einen herrlichen Blick auf das zentrale Bergmassiv hat. Anschließend geht es hinunter zum Waldpark Ribeiro Frio, wo wir die Forellenzuchtanlagen besuchen und einige der endemischen Arten des Laurissilva-Waldes, wie den Lorbeerbaum (Laurus novocanariensis), beobachten können.

Wir setzen unsere Reise nach Santana im Norden der Insel fort und passieren dabei die Gemeinde Faial. In Santana, der einzigen Stadt im Norden der Insel, sind die berühmten “strohgedeckten Häuser” das Highlight. Auf der Rückfahrt geht es hinunter zur Gemeinde Porto da Cruz, die direkt am Meer liegt und wo man eine Rumfabrik aus Zuckerrohr besichtigen kann. Weiter geht es zum Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto in Ponta de São Lourenço, am östlichen Ende der Insel, von wo aus man einen herrlichen Blick auf die Klippen der Nordküste hat. Wir kehren nach Funchal zurück, vorbei am Aussichtspunkt Pico do Facho mit Blick auf das Machico-Tal.

Known for being where the nuns from Santa Clara convent in Funchal found a place to hide from the French Corsairs’ attacks in XV/XVI centuries, Pico dos Barcelos is where this tour originates, a sightseeing point with a superb view from the capital’s bay.
