CHAOS IN MADEIRA: 185 Flights Cancelled, “Endless Queues” & Red Alerts as Storm Emilia Hits!
The situation in Madeira has escalated into a travel nightmare this weekend as Depression Emilia batters the archipelago with severe weather conditions, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and emergency services overwhelmed.
Airport Paralysis: 185 Flights Grounded If you are planning to fly in or out of Madeira, brace yourself for bad news. The Madeira International Airport is facing a complete meltdown with a staggering 105 flights cancelled this Saturday alone. This brings the total number of cancellations since Friday to 185, effectively paralyzing air travel to the island.
Reports from the terminal describe “endless queues” snaking through the airport, with frustrated travelers—particularly those flying with Ryanair—waiting hours just to try and rebook their connections.
No End in Sight? The worst might not be over yet. According to the latest updates, the airport is expected to remain severely conditioned until tomorrow afternoon (Sunday). Winds have been clocking in at ferocious speeds, with gusts exceeding 100 km/h at the airport, making safe landings impossible.
Island on Alert: 185 Emergency Incidents It’s not just the airport that is suffering. The storm has wreaked havoc across the island. By 12:00 PM on Saturday, the Regional Civil Protection Service had already responded to 185 separate incidents related to the bad weather. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) is maintaining severe weather warnings, ranging from yellow to red, as the depression continues to bring dangerous winds and even sub-zero temperatures to the mountainous regions.
Traveler Advice If you are currently in Madeira or scheduled to travel, checking your flight status is mandatory. Do not head to the airport unless your flight is confirmed, as the terminal is currently overcrowded and chaotic.
Stay safe and follow all Civil Protection recommendations!

Friends and colleagues grew concerned after she failed to show up for work, stating she had not been seen or heard from since Sunday, November 2. The case was considered serious enough...
The days of simply parking your car and walking into nature are officially over. In a drastic move to control tourism, the Regional Government has imposed strict new regulations that will fundamentally change how you visit Madeira.
