Why Hike PR 1?

The PR 1 – Vereda do Areeiro is the crown jewel of Madeira hiking. It connects the island’s three highest peaks, traversing ridges, tunnels, and steep staircases carved directly into the volcanic rock.

Even with the partial closure, the walk to Ninho da Manta (The Buzzard’s Nest) offers the sensation of “walking above the clouds” that has made Madeira famous worldwide.

Trail Map

From the Radar Station to Pedra Rija.

Step-by-Step Guide

  • 1

    The Radar Station (Start)

Start at the parking lot (1818m). Walk past the cafeteria and the white radar dome to find the trailhead on the left.

  • 2

    Ninho da Manta

A short, paved walk leads to the first balcony. Look straight down into the Fajã da Nogueira valley. This is the prime sunrise spot.

  • 3

    The Ridge Walk

The path narrows and follows the razor-edge ridge. There are railings on both sides, but the drop-offs are massive.

  • 4

    Pedra Rija (Turnaround)

You reach the famous “Stairway to Heaven” section at Pedra Rija. Due to current closures, you must turn back here.

🦅 Ninho da Manta

The classic “Bird’s Eye” shot looking down the valley spine. Great for silhouettes against the morning light.

🪜 Stairway to Heaven
