Body of Missing Polish Tourist Found in Madeira

Igor Holewiński, a 31-year-old tourist who was reported missing in Madeira a week ago, was found deceased today.

According to reports, the body was discovered by a local Madeiran guide. The guide was part of a search effort that also included a private rescue team hired by the victim’s friends and family.

Official sources confirmed that the body was located in a remote, hard-to-access area in the Ribeira Grande, Faias region of Santana. It is believed the tourist suffered a fall.

Public Security Police (PSP) have been dispatched to the location to manage the scene.

Throughout the week, an extensive official search was conducted by the PSP Search and Rescue Team, along with the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Regional Civil Protection Service, the Forest Police, and the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN).

The private rescue team, hired by the family, arrived on the island on Friday and began their search yesterday, ultimately locating the body this afternoon.

Mr. Holewiński was last heard from last Sunday when he told his family he was planning a hike to Pico Ruivo. He did not return from the hike. The last signal from his mobile phone was tracked to an area near the Levada dos Tornos tunnel.

This is Madeira Island is deeply saddened by this tragic news and extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Igor Holewiński during this incredibly difficult time.
