Visiting Fanal? Madeira’s Iconic Forest to Get New Sustainable Visit Model
Significant new measures are being introduced at Fanal, one of the most symbolic and popular locations within Madeira’s Laurissilva forest. As reported by DIÁRIO, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has officially defined a new daily “carrying capacity” for the area, limiting access to 3,000 visitors per day.
This decision is based on a scientific study conducted in partnership with the University of Madeira (UMa) to ensure the long-term preservation of the sensitive ecosystem.
To support this new visitor cap, an “orderly, sustainable, and innovative” visiting model will be implemented. This new system is set to include:
A single, defined circuit for visitors to follow.
Designated points of interest to highlight key areas.
Official ‘photostops’ to help manage foot traffic and protect the landscape.
In addition to the new model, authorities are also considering the introduction of a potential entry fee, estimated to be between €3 and €5 per person.
This move aims to protect the unique environment of Fanal while still allowing visitors to experience its beauty in a sustainable way.
