🚨 Alert: All Madeira Trails and Levadas Closed

Update for Tomorrow, March 3rd

Please be advised that due to severe weather conditions forecast for tomorrow, all recommended hiking trails and levadas across Madeira will be officially closed.

Safety is the top priority for everyone on the island. The anticipated weather makes these routes highly unpredictable and dangerous. Heavy rain and high winds significantly increase the risk of landslides, falling rocks, and rapid, unexpected flooding along the levada channels.

Important Safety Reminders:

  • Do not attempt to hike tomorrow. Even if the weather seems clear or manageable near the coast, conditions higher up in the mountains or deep within the valleys can be drastically worse and change without warning.
  • Respect the closures. These restrictions are put in place by local authorities to protect both visitors and emergency rescue teams.
  • Stay updated. We will continue to monitor the situation. Always verify the current status of the trails on the official IFCN (Institute for Forests and Nature Conservation) website or app before planning any future hikes.

What to do instead? A rainy day in Madeira is the perfect excuse to explore the island’s indoor attractions, enjoy a long, traditional Madeiran lunch, or visit local museums. Stay safe, stay dry, and adjust your itinerary for the day.
