Vuelve el sendero más famoso de Madeira, pero no será igual
FUNCHAL, MADEIRA – After an agonizing wait for hikers worldwide, Madeira’s most legendary trail is finally set to reopen. The iconic PR1 Vereda do Arieiro, the breathtaking path connecting Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo, will welcome the public back starting April 27, 2026.
The route, often called the “stairway to heaven,” has been tragically closed since the devastating wildfires of 2024, which caused significant damage to its structure and the surrounding landscape.
The announcement was confirmed by Eduardo Jesus, the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture. The trail’s first official use will be for the prestigious Madeira Island Ultra-Trail (MIUT) race, scheduled for April 25-26, 2026. Only after the event concludes will the trail be opened to the general public.
The New Reality: Restrictions and Fees
However, hikers expecting to return to the trail as it was will face a shock. The reopening comes with significant new conditions.
Authorities have confirmed that access will no longer be unlimited. Visitor flow will be strictly managed and limited based on the trail’s “carrying capacity.” This new measure, overseen by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (IFCN), is being implemented to protect the fragile, recovering environment and ensure visitor safety after the fire.
Furthermore, a hiking fee of €3 o €5 will be introduced for all users of the trail.
More importantly, new mandatory rules will be strictly enforced to ensure safety and preserve the landscape:
Proper Footwear is Obligatory: Hikers will be required to wear decent hiking shoes or boots with good grip. Access may be denied to those with inappropriate footwear (like sandals or casual sneakers).
Stay On The Marked Path: It will be strictly forbidden to go off-trail, especially to take photos. This rule is critical for preventing erosion and protecting the delicate, recovering flora.
Plan for “Nature Calls”: There are NO toilets along the 7km trail. Facilities are available for a small fee at the start (Pico do Arieiro) and near the end (at the Casa de Abrigo mountain hut). Hikers must use these facilities before starting. For emergencies, the “Leave No Trace” principle is mandatory: all waste, including toilet paper, must be packed out in a sealed bag. This will be strictly enforced.
Be Prepared: Given the trail’s high-altitude and rapidly changing mountain weather, hikers must carry sufficient water and appropriate clothing (including rain and wind protection).
A shadow of Doubt Looms Over Full Recovery
While the reopening of the main PR1 route is a major milestone, a shadow of doubt hangs over the full restoration of the area.
Reports highlight a critical point: restoration work has not even begun on an extensive 17-kilometer network of other fire-damaged trails that connect to the main route. This includes the vital Encumeada–Pico Ruivo segment.
While the IFCN has plans for debris removal, new retaining walls, and paving, the lack of current progress raises serious questions. It remains to be seen how this delay will impact the greater hiking network and whether the announced April 2026 date for the PR1 could be affected by these surrounding issues.
For now, the reopening of the PR1 itself stands as a symbol of resilience, but it marks a new, more controlled era for hiking on Madeira’s most famous peak.
