Nestled in the heart of the Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. the Levada do Caldeirão Verde is one of Madeira’s most iconic hikes. The trail begins at the picturesque Casa das Queimadas, a mountain refuge with thatched roofing and traditional Madeiran architecture that looks as if it has stepped out of an old postcard.

From there, the path follows a levada built in the 18th century, originally designed to carry water from the springs of Caldeirão Verde to the farmlands of Santana. Stretching for about 6.5 km one way (13 km round trip), the route unfolds through lush green slopes, dramatic ravines, dense vegetation and a series of emblematic tunnels carved into the rock, all adorned with ferns, moss and centuries-old trees.

Along the way, natural viewpoints reveal sheer cliffs and sweeping views of Madeira’s northern landscapes. The constant sound of flowing water accompanies hikers all the way to the final destination: the Caldeirão Verde, an impressive natural amphitheatre where a 100-metre waterfall plunges into an emerald-green lagoon at the base of a rock wall covered in vegetation.

This is the perfect spot to pause, soak in the atmosphere, and feel the refreshing coolness of this untouched sanctuary. Here, nature shows itself in its purest form — humid air, the echo of falling water and the sensation of being in a secluded refuge, far removed from daily life.
