Madeira Tourist Tragedy: The Official Conclusion

Authorities in Madeira have stated that there is no suspicion of criminal activity in the death of a Polish tourist whose body was found in the Santana area. The Judiciary Police (PJ) conducted an inspection of the body on Sunday.

The 31-year-old man, identified as Igor Holewiński, had been reported missing on the island for one week. He was found in the Ribeira Grande area, in Faias, by a Madeiran guide who was part of a private rescue team hired by the victim’s family and friends.

José Matos, director of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Madeira Judiciary Police, confirmed that no evidence of a crime has been found at this time. He added that inspectors have recovered Mr. Holewiński’s personal belongings, which will be returned to his family.

“There was no third-party intervention,” Director Matos confirmed. “He likely slipped from a very muddy and rocky place.”
