Frightened by the heavy rain but also by the successive lightning and thunder, the population of Ponta Delgada and Boaventura witnessed an unusual phenomenon in the skies of Madeira.

In 24 hours, between Christmas night and the First Octave, the network of thunderstorm detectors installed in Madeira detected 45,400 flashes, of which 40 thousand occurred between the clouds, four thousand are called negative arcs and another 450 were positive.

This registration is made by the thunderstorm detector network installed in Madeira by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, the improvement and resizing of the thunderstorm detector network in mainland Portugal and, also, the exchange of data in real time with the network of AEMET (Peninsular and Canary Spain), which allows to monitor the electromagnetic activity of the atmosphere, in the Atlantic region that extends from the Canaries to Madeira and Mainland Portugal.
