Madeira Airport has been transformed into a veritable dormitory, according to passengers stranded due to flight cancellations caused by the wind.

“The airport is out of control,” emphasizes a witness to the situation. They give the example of Ryanair, which “is only guaranteeing flights for August 29/30,” describing about the passengers as “dire.” They further criticize: “They are leaving people to fend for themselves,” they lament.

The situation involves hundreds of passengers with nowhere to stay and no support on the ground from the airlines, with mattresses scattered everywhere and, not being enough, “people sleeping on the floor.”

As we have been reporting, the Airport experienced one of the worst days of this year, perhaps in a long time. Although it was not closed to landings or take-offs, only a little more than two dozen flights managed to land throughout the day. Between cancellations and diversions, which were later canceled, there were 28 arriving flights and the same number of departures this Sunday.

The last flight has just landed at 9:35 PM, a TAP plane from Lisbon. There is still one last flight, in this case, Binter, which should be carried out shortly before 10:00 PM and which at this time should have already taken off from Porto Santo.

Roughly counting, there will be several hundred people occupying a large part of the departure area of the Airport and a little bit everywhere in that infrastructure.

Tomorrow there are already at least two canceled flights, but the hope of many of these passengers is that there will be seats on the flights that manage to land – the wind is expected to continue to hinder the operation. What is certain is that many of those who have their flight scheduled for tomorrow will join those who are desperate, hoping that their flight does not have the same ‘luck’.
