Madeira Island with its rugged landscapes has over the years constructed a number of cable cars and scenic elevators. Many of them in quite hard to find locations – but we can reveal all the locations for you here on this article.

Funchal – Monte Cable Car

This journey offers magnificent panoramic views from Funchal towards Monte.This cable car will take you from the old part of Funchal to Monte in around 15 minutes. Enjoy a spectacular view of Funchal’s bay and valleys from one of the 39 seven-seater cars. The Funchal station is in Campo Almirante Reis and the Monte station in Largo das Babosas. You can get from Funchal to Monte in a few minutes while taking in the surrounding landscape. 

In Monte you can take the opportunity to visit the magnificent Monte Palace Tropical Gardens and also the Church of Our lady of Monte where lays the tomb of the last Austro-Hungarian Emperor Charles I.

Monte – Botanical Garden

It takes around 9 minutes to travel from the Botanical Garden to the district of Babosas (Monte), on a cable car with a panoramic route.

The main station is in the Botanical Garden and the other is in Monte, near Largodas Babosas.
The cable car offers visitors a panoramic trip with excellent views of Funchal Bay and Vale da Ribeira de João Gomes.

It is also an excellent way of getting to the Tornos levadas, Bom Sucesso and Curral dos Romeiros, all very popular tourist attractions. The main station is in the Botanical Garden and the other is in Monte, near Largo das Babosas.

After visiting the fantastic natural world of the Botanical Garden, you can go on to romantic Monte. Sit comfortably outside the bar in Largo das Babosas and drink in the magnificent view of the valley. The station at the Botanical Garden has a bar and restaurant, both with terraces commanding splendid views. The Botanical Garden cable car line is 1,600 metres long and its 12 eight-seater cars run at a height of between 10 and 100 metres, with a capacity for about 400 people an hour.

Garajau Cable Car

Opened in 2007, the Garajau Cable Car is located in Ponta do Garajau, where the iconic statue of “Cristo Rei” was built.

This means of transport allows access to the beautiful beach of Garajau, a bathing area equipped with a small coffee shop and a diving centre where you can get to know the Garajau Marine Reserve.

Câmara de Lobos – Rancho

The Cabo Girão Cable Car connects the area of Sítio do Rancho and the Fajãs do Cabo Girão, in a journey that offers fine panoramic views over the typical Madeiran terraces located by the sea – the “fajãs”, and the south coast.

The Cabo Girão Cable Car was used initially as a means of transport so that the farmers from Quinta Grande parish could access the farmlands located on this area. This infrastructure also offers its visitors a modern bar and restaurant service.
Opened in August 2003, the Cabo Girão Cable Car is composed of two cabins, with a maximum capacity of 6 persons.

Quinta Grande – Fajã dos Padres

The Cable car of Fajã dos Padres offers visitors a route with views of the slopes of the huge cliff to Faja dos Padres.

This means of transport provides a four minutes journey, with views over the south coast of Madeira and the small bay of Fajã dos Padres, where there are numerous wine plantations in a path over 300 meters.
This lift provides access to the existing beach area as well as to the small restaurant located in this area which is also accessible by sea.

Porto Moniz – Achadas da Cruz

This modern means of transport provides excellent panoramic views over the green hills and the blue sea.
The Achadas da Cruz Cable Car provides access between the Achadas da Cruz area and the small pebbled beach located in this area. It also provides support to the local farmers of this area in accessing the farmlands and carrying their harvests.

Santana – Rocha do Navio

Located on the north coast of the island in the municipality of Santana, the Rocha do Navio Cable Car offers visitors a journey with stunning panoramic views over the sea and the farmlands that exist there – “Fajãs”.

This mean of transportation was built to provide assistance to the local farmers in accessing their farmlands, a trip that lasts about 5 minutes.
The Rocha do Navio Cable Car allows visitors to access the Nature Reserve with the same name, exclusively marine, which access is also reachable by a trail carved in the rock. The name Rocha do Navio is due to the Dutch shipwreck that occurred there in the 19th century.
