The Madeira Atlantic Festival sets the beginning of summer in Madeira, and is one of the most recent tourist entertainment events, to be held on June, 3rd to 26th.

This event consists of a diverse set of initiatives spread throughout the month of June, with emphasis on the pyro musical shows; the Atlantic Roots Festival and the Regional Arts Week.


Pyro musical shows – 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th of June (Saturdays)The pyro musical shows are held on the four Saturdays during the month of June, at 10:30 p.m. at the pier outside Pontinha. These wonderful and exciting performances, lasting about 20 minutes each, combine fireworks and music in a unique experience for tourists and residents. In these shows, companies will compete for a trophy awarded by public vote, through the Internet and boxes located in strategic places in Funchal city centre (City Pier – day of the show, La Vie, and Marina Shopping centres, Av. Arriaga main Tourism Office).

Summer Sunset – 3rd to 26th June​ –  Praça do Povo

Fridays and Saturdays: 18:00 to 00:00

Sundays: 18:00 to 23:00

The weekend afternoons are now more pleasant and appealing for outdoor activities. In June, from Friday to Sunday, you can enjoy the sunset in the garden next to Praça do Povo, with entertainment and small stalls where you can find traditional Madeiran food and products.

16th Century Market – «Water, the Blood of Earth» –  03rd,04th,05th June – Machico

The 15th edition, organized by MQ – Mercado Quinhentista: Associação de Recreação Histórica de Machico, takes place in downtown Machico, under the theme «Water, the Blood of Earth». This market intends to recreate collective experiences from the 16th century, where you can find various products, handicraft, food and drink zone, games, diverse entertainment and various exhibitions.

Water Screen – Multimedia Show – 04th to 17th June – Machico and Funchal

The multimedia show “Ecrã de Água” (Water Screen), comprises the projection of a video which includes colour, light and sound by making use of a translucent water screen with a minimum width of 50 metres. This show counts on two sessions, one in the city of Machico and the other in Funchal, with a total duration of approximately 20 minutes.

Echo dance show – 10th and 11th – Praça do Povo 

ECHO is a Contemporary Dance ballet based on the award-winning short film “Alike”. It was created and will be directed by Casey Lee Binns, with the musical composition and direction by Márcio Faria, aiming to be a reflection on everyday life. Through dancing, a scenario is created showing the need to strengthen ties, further alluding to the magical atmosphere created at the Atlantic Festival.

Regional Arts Week – 14th to 19th June


“Party in the Garden”, ESCOLArtes, Meetings of artistic modalities, Artistic Expression Regional Exhibition, Face – Audiovisual and School Cinema Festival, Voz d’amanhã – 8th Madeira Youth Song Festival, workshops, concerts and various shows – Organisation: Regional Education Department (SER – Secretaria Regional da Educação), central walkway of Avenida Arriaga, Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre, Municipal Garden Auditorium, Espaço Entrearte of the Regional Education Department, São Lourenço Palace, Regional Legislative Assembly and Casino da Madeira Congress Centre Auditorium.

Popular Saints Festivities – 13th,24th,29th June

The Popular Saints Festivities are celebrations that are held in several countries, historically related to the summer solstice pagan festival, which was celebrated on June 24th. The Autonomous Region of Madeira is no exception, and a bit throughout the Region, the month of June is synonymous with celebrations in praise of the three Popular Saints: Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter.

The Saint John altars, which constitute a festivity based in a neighbourhood tradition, in addition to the traditional food of the Popular Saints, holds a public contest of the Altars to the patron Saint. It takes place every year during the week that includes Saint John’s Day, usually the last week of June. It is held in Rua da Figueira Preta, Travessa dos Reis, Rua da Conceição and Praça do Carmo.

Bread Fair – 17th to 19th June – Praça do Povo – Funchal

Organized for over 20 years by Lions Clube Funchal, the Regional Bread Fair aims to raise funds for the club’s social works. Each edition of this event includes animation by folk groups in the mornings and afternoons of the fair days.

Circus Arts Show – KAI – 17th, 18th and 19th June – Praça do Povo

Held at Praça do Povo, next to Funchal’s pier, this is an avant-garde show related to the 4 elements of nature, resulting from the fusion of dance with circus arts, relating to this magical time, the emblematic Atlantic Festival.The show counts on the participation of several performers including contemporary dancers, foot acrobatics, aerialists, trapeze artists, joined forces, fire jugglers, giant fans, fire breathers, singing, aquaball, among others.

11th Atlantic Roots Festival –  23rd, 24th and 25th June – Praça do Povo

Organized by the Regional Directorate for Culture, the Atlantic Roots Festival is one of the oldest European World Music festivals and the oldest at national level too.
