The strong wind felt in Santa Cruz continues to cause major constraints in the air operation.

The strong wind felt in the city of Santa Cruz on Tuesday continues to cause major constraints in the air operation at Madeira Airport. The wind’s intensity has already forced the cancellation of 30 flights that were scheduled to land between 00:00 and 23:59 on May 9th. As a result of the suspension of these arrivals, the same number of departures (27) that were supposed to take place have also been cancelled, totalling 57 air operations and thousands of affected passengers.

In addition to the cancelled flights, it should also be noted the high delays, ranging from minutes to hours, as well as a total of four diverted planes so far to Lisbon and Porto.

During this morning, the northeast wind recorded gusts of 85 km/h in Santa Cruz/Airport. The mountainous regions and North and South coasts of Madeira are under a yellow warning due to the strong wind, which will be in effect until 6 pm on Tuesday, May 9th.
