Fireworks display with a 40-second climax

The New Year’s Eve fireworks show in the Autonomous Region of Madeira is considered one of the most spectacular pyrotechnic events in the world. This year, more than 20 tons of explosives will be used in about 98 thousand pieces.

The celebrations for the end of 2023 will begin before midnight. At 20 minutes to midnight on January 1, 2024, the sky will be ‘heated up’ with a small demonstration of the over 20 tons of pyrotechnics that will welcome the New Year. The fireworks, shaped as a countdown, will be ‘harmonized’ with audiovisuals. Innovative luminous elements will join the pyrotechnics, promising to provide unique moments in bidding farewell to this year.

In total, 20,222 kilograms of explosive material will be used, distributed across 97,500 pyrotechnic pieces, to materialize a project called ‘Madeira, Ex-libris of the Atlantic,’ as revealed by Carlos Macedo, the administrator of Macedo’s Pyrotechnics. This private company will be responsible for the New Year’s Eve event in Madeira for the twentieth time.

The Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Tourism and Culture, invested over 1.1 million euros in the pyrotechnic show.

At midnight in 2024, the fireworks will be launched from 59 stations, with 57 distributed throughout the municipality of Funchal and two in Porto Santo. The multicoloured fireworks show will erupt from three zones in the Madeiran capital, spanning from the sea to the amphitheatre (see image).

For this year’s edition, 8 minutes of fireworks are planned, with a climax of 40 seconds, almost double the usual 25 seconds.

Carlos Macedo has ‘no major doubts’ that this will be ‘the best show in the world,’ even though he considers it impossible to beat the record for the world’s largest fireworks show, a title dominated by the United Arab Emirates.

Involved in the organization of the event are 380 professionals, 94 of whom are pyro technicians, as revealed by the top representative of the northern company.

The entire show will be broadcast worldwide through social media and television, using livestreaming technology to provide live coverage of the highlight of the Madeira festivities.
