Madeira has once again been named the “Best European Island Destination” at the 30th edition of the 2023 “World Travel Awards,” beating the other 11 islands that were also in contention. This marks the 9th time the region has won this international award.

The announcement was made today at the Gala Ceremony of Europe 2023, held at the Sheraton Batumi Hotel in Batumi, Georgia.

Competing with Madeira for this now-acclaimed award were: Azores, Majorca, and the Canary Islands (Spain), Crete and the Cyclades, Aegean Islands (Greece), Cyprus, Guernsey and Jersey (United Kingdom), Malta, and also Sardinia and Sicily (Italy).

The Regional Secretary of Tourism and Culture and President of the Madeira Promotion Association considers it “important for Madeira to win the ‘Best European Island Destination’ award once again, contributing to further solidify the recognition the region has achieved worldwide.”

Eduardo Jesus emphasizes that this distinction “should fill with pride all those who work in the tourism industry in the region, as well as the residents who see their homeland continuously valued internationally, and also the thousands of travelers who visit us, thus further enhancing their holiday destination.”

The ‘World Travel Awards’ were established in 1993 and are awarded annually to recognize, reward, and celebrate the best in all key sectors of the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries.
